SEDGLEY, GORNAL & COSELEY

Each month more than 2000 copies of this edition        of VILLAGE VOICE are circulated throughout Sedgley, Gornal and Coseley. Although most are distributed     on a house-to-house basis, copies are also available in all the local libraries, community centres and health centres.

It is our policy to vary the circulation every month - so that over a three month period over 5000 local households get a copy of VILLAGE VOICE.

Areas that we cover with this edition include: Sedgley, Lower Gornal, Upper Gornal, Gornal Wood, Coseley, The Straits, Roseville and Woodsetton.

CIRCULATION

We are always interested to hear from readers about any aspect of life in and around Sedgley, Gornal or Coseley. We are particularly interested in any photographs that you may have that show days gone by in the area. Click for details of how to contact us.....

ABOUT THE AREA

SEDGLEY is one of the ancient manors of  Dudley. It originally consisted of the villages of Sedgley, Over and

Nether Gornal,  Coseley, Gospel End, Woodsetton, Cotwall End, Ettingshall and Brierley and included Dudley Castle within its boundaries.

Sedgley itself has a rich history - it was, for example, the first place to manufacture steel pen nibs and it once

hosted the world’s largest and most productive coal mine. Gornal was for many years the centre of local nail-making as well as being particularly famous for its salt sellers and ‘white’ sand. In many ways the heart of

Coseley was ripped out of it when it was split between the boroughs of Dudley and Wolverhampton. Its two

largest employers - Bilston Steelworks and Cannon Industries - have long since disappeared but the resilience

of the local community still shines through.

Local MP and Minister for the West Midlands Ian Austin is an avid reader of VILLAGE VOICE. He is a local lad who was a councillor on Dudley Council before moving to London to work for the Labour Party.

He became a political adviser to Gordon Brown and when Brown became Prime Minister Ian was appointed his Parliamentary Private Secretary.

Since then Ian has had a number of promotions including to his present role championing the region. “Although I have these other responsibilities my first and foremost focus is on my constituency. I have the best possible job - representing the area that I love. We have a fantastically rich heritage and publications such as VILLAGE VOICE play an important part in passing down knowledge about it”  he commented. “It is also good to see so many local businesses supporting it - and hopefully it will go from strength to strength.
